Paul Zollman, DVM

Dr. Paul Zollman, 86, a longtime Mayo Clinic veterinarian and a developer of the Zollman Zoo at Oxbow Park, died on Oct., 2008 at Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN. Dr. Zollman graduated from Macon High School in 1940 and served during World War II until 1946. He was a veterinarian at Mayo Clinic for 41 years. Dr. Zollman was instrumental in the development of Oxbow Park and the Zollman Zoo, which was named in his honor. He was a member of many civic organizations, including Kiwanis, of which he was president in 1969; the Izaak Walton League, of which he was president in 1961 and state president in 1962; the Minnesota Zoo Board and Oxbow Park Board; The Rochester Planning and Zoning Commission; the Olmsted County Fair Board; the Olmsted County Fair Board and the Olmsted County Park and Recreation Committee. In 1990, Dr. Zollman was named Minnesota Veterinarian of the Year. He also taught firearm safety with the DNR for 45 years. Survivors include he wife, Dawn; five daughters, Mar Zollman (Greg Gruenhagen) of Minneapolis, Anne Hasiuk of Bloomington, Ind., Karen Zollman of Edmonds, Wash., Paula Zollman (Dana Puffer) of Rochester and Helen (Doug) Kayser of Colbert, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, John (mary) of Estes Park, Colo. Walter Mackey, DVM

Retired Veterinary Historian Age 84 of Roseville, MN Passed away October 19, 2008. Dr. Mackey is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of 55 years; children, Cathleen Quinn, Kevin (Denise) Mackey, Carol (Jamie) Kujawa & Steven Mackey; grandchildren, Kelsey Quinn, Katie & Sara Mackey, Madeline & Joshua Kujawa, & Kyle Mackey; brother, John (Florence). Aftre serving 3 1/2 years in the Navy during WWII, Walt attended the U of M. He earned the following degrees - 1949 B.S., 1951 D.V.M. and a M.P.H. in 1968. He started his Veterinary career employed by Drs. Zupp and Magnusson in Bloomington Prairie, MN. He has a private practice for 13 years in Hayfield, MN. He then became Director of the Research Animal Division of the U of M, followed by a position teaching Anatomy at the Veterinary College. He finished his career working as Assistant Veterinarian for the Minnesota Board of Animal Health ubtil retiring in 1992. Many will remember him for being instrumental in founding the U of M Veterinary College and for the thousands of hours of dedicated work donated to the Minnesota Veterinary Historical Museum. Dr. Mackey was an active member of the MVMA and served on the Board of Directors including as president in 1985. He was recently awarded the MVMA's Veterinarian of the Year award in 2006. memorials may be made, if desired, to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Macular Degeneration Research or the Minnesota Veterinary Historical museum.


Kenneth Detlefsen, DVM

Kenneth Detlefsen, age 77, of Red Wing, died on January 19, 2008. Kenneth was a native Minnesotan and graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. Following graduation he became part owner of the Hiawatha Valley Veterinary Clinic and later started the Bluffs pet Clinic and retired from practice in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Laverne, of Red Wing, and two children, Anne and William.

 

Paul J. Cox, DVM

Cox, Paul J. DVM, MPH, BS Age 86 of West St. Paul passed away 6/9/08. Survived by wife Margaret; sister-inlaw Gertrude Quick, Dorothy Dempsey and Irene Dempsey; several nieces, nephews and loving friends. Served as a LT in WWII, graduated in the 1st Veterinary Medicine Class at the U of M, Practiced Veterinary medicine in Owatonna, Served at the St. Paul Bureau as Director of Environment health for 18 years. he spent his last days at Our Lady of Good Council Cancer Home.

    

Henry L. Banal, DVM

Banal, Dr. Henry L. age 84 of Sauk Centre, died Mon., June 9, 2008. Born May 4, 1924 in Buhl, Minnesota to Enrico and Erminia (Frans-nelli) Banal, he graduated from Buhl High School in 1942, and attended Hibbing Junior College. He then served in the U.S. Navy, in Pacific theatre, during WWII. A 1952 graduate of the University of Minnesota veterinary College, he practiced veterinary medicine for 35 years, and together with Dr. Charles Brown established the Sauk Centre Veterinary Clinic. On May 3, 1958, he married his wife, Helen in Windom, MN. Henry was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Curch and had served as a member of the choir, an usher, a Eucharistic minister, on the parish council, and taught religious education. He also served his community as a member of the Sauk Centre City Council, as a Mayor of Sauk Centre, as the first chairperson of the Sauk Centre area Combined Fund, and was appointed to the Minnesota Board of Animal Health. As a member of the Sauk Centre Seniors he was a strong advocate for senior citizens. he was instrumental in the establishment of the Senior Center and in bringing the City Bus to Sauk Centre. He was also a member of the bishop Busch Council 4863 Knights of Columbus, Queen of Peace general Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, American Legion Post 67, Minnesota Veterinary Association, and American Veterinary Medicine Association.  An avid musician, Henry played numerous instruments, but his passion was the clarinet. He was a member of the St. Cloud Municipal Band, the long Prairie Chamber Orchestra, and Sentimental Journey. He emjoyed playing with firends at many venues including nursing homes, festivals, and senior centers. He awas also an enthusiatic music teacher. henry enjoyed collecting antiques and restoring antique furniture. he was preceded in death by his son, Dominic Banal on Sept 7, 1986; his parents; two infant brothers; and brother, Oreste Banal. Survivers include his wife of 50 years, Helen Banal of Sauk Centre; four children, Mary Ellen (Michael) Sauser of Pine City, Thomas (Karen) Banal of Sauk Centre, Susan (Andrew Tanick) Banal of Minnetonka and Mark Banal of Hopkins; four grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle, and Christopher Banal of Sauk Centre, and Talia Tanick of Minnetonka; two sisters, Mary Seppi of Buhl and Sylvia Perell of Hibbing; and many neices and nephews. memorials preferred to Holy FamilySchool Endowment Fund, 231 Sinclair Lewis Av., Sauk Centre, MN 56378.
