Veterinary students will be given the opportunity to register for the seminar, if space is available, 5 days prior to the seminar for a $20 fee. Students will be informed by a broadcast e-mail.

About the Seminar

Small Animal Endocrinology
This small animal endocrinology seminar will focus on diagnostic and therapeutic issues relevant to diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism, and disorders of the thyroid gland in dogs and cats. Topics will include an overview of the management of diabetic ketoacidosis, selecting insulins for the treatment of diabetes, techniques for monitoring diabetes, a discussion on causes for poor control of the diabetic dog and cat, interpretation of diagnostic tests for hyperadrenocorticism, use of trilostane for treating hyperadrenocorticism,  approach to the incidental adrenal mass, interpreting thyroid gland function tests, feline hyperthyroidism and renal insufficiency, and recommendations for monitoring the hypothyroid dog. 

About the Speaker

Richard W. Nelson, DVM, DACVIM ~ UC Davis
Dr. Nelson received his DVM degree from the University of Minnesota in 1979, completed his small animal medicine residency at the University of California, Davis in 1982, and is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Nelson is currently Professor of Internal Medicine at UC Davis. Dr. Nelson has authored numerous manuscripts and book chapters in the arena of clinical endocrinology and has co-authored two textbooks, Canine and Feline Endocrinology and Reproduction with Dr. Ed Feldman and Small Animal Internal Medicine with Dr. Guillermo Couto.
