MVMA Chemical Impairment and Addictions Committee

Our purpose is to assist and support veterinarians with addiction related issues in a discrete manner.  We have no disciplinary role.

Addictions:

  • are a disease
  • have many undesirable consequences
  • are not a sign of moral weakness
  • progress in a predictable pattern along an unpredictable timeframe
  • can be treated

..; How we can help

Members of the Chemical Impairment and Addictions Committee have worked to become informed on issues related to addiction and abuse issues. We can serve as a resource, a place to plan out what to do when addiction becomes an issue in your workplace. In an already uncomfortable position, we can give support to do what must be done. We have information related to:

  • Legal issues  such as drug testing in the workplace, American Disability Act and DEA policies
  • Sources of professional help for setting up interventions
  • Treatment facilities
  • Follow up monitoring for the professional who wants to “prove” continuing sobriety
  • Maintaining/ obtaining licensure in the face of addiction and recovery
  • Outreach about the nature of addictive disease

All referrals are handled as confidentially as possible. However, in situations where serious infractions of the law have occurred, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed.

..; Signs of Addiction
