Helping the Critical Patient Undergo Anesthesia

Jane Quandt, DVM, MS, DACVAA, DACVECC

Dr. Quandt obtained her DVM from Iowa State University 1987, followed by a residency and MS in anesthesia from the University of MN. She became boarded in anesthesia in 1993. Dr. Quandt was a faculty member of the University of Georgia from 1991 to 1998, and then did a critical care residency at UC Davis/University of MN. She became a clinical professor of anesthesia at the University of MN from 2001 -2011. Dr. Quandt was boarded in Emergency Critical Care in 2007. She is currently an associate professor of comparative anesthesia at the University of Georgia.

Detailed Schedule

 8:00 - 9:00 am Continental Breakfast     

9:00 am – 10:30 am Anesthesia for the Dog with GDV and Heart Murmurs
At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Describe the anesthetic risks and protocols for the dog with GDV.
  • Discuss patient monitoring and how to treat potential complications.
  • Identify anesthetic drugs that may be used for dogs who present with heart murmurs.
  • Recognize potential side effects of the anesthetic drugs.
  • Explain what type and rate of fluid therapy may be indicated. 

10:30-10:45 am Break   

10:45 am – 12:15 pm Fluid Therapy: Crystalloids or Colloids
At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • State the different types of fluids when one may be indicated and list the potential side effects.
  • Outline the controversy over the use of colloid fluid therapy.

12:15 pm – 1:15 pm Lunch

1:15 pm – 3:00 pm Treatment of Refractory Hypotension
At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Discuss the basic treatment of hypotension.
  • Explain treatment options for hypotension that does not respond to the basic treatments.
 
3:00 pm – 3:15 pm Break
 
3:15 pm – 4:30 pm Case Discussion: 

We will have an audience based discussion on anesthesia and management of critical cases and possible treatment options for those case complications.


Seminar Information:

  • Breaks and lunch are provided to onsite attendees. Email or call the MVMA if you have dietary accommodations.
  • Proceedings are provided to all attendees.  
  • 7 CE credits can be earned for this seminar.
  • Veterinary students will be given the opportunity to register for a $20 fee, if space is available, 5 days prior to the seminar. Students will be informed by broadcast e-mail

  • Cancellations must be done 48 hours prior to the seminar for a refund - a fee of 10% is nonrefundable

Webinar registration option:

You have the option to attend the MVMA Spring Seminar on April 6th, which will begin at 9:00 am CDT, from anywhere you have an internet connection! Choose the "webinar" option when you register. The morning of the seminar you will be emailed the secure link to attend the live session. Only the purchaser has access with this link, as the attendee signs-in with his/her name and are monitored. The registered webinar attendee is also the only one eligible for the CE credits associated with the MVMA Spring Seminar. The webinar is only available during the live presentation; it will not be offered later.

What will you experience: Once you have accessed the webinar your computer screen will be dominated with a direct-feed PowerPoint for clarity of viewing, plus the audio of Dr. Quandt as the slides automatically advance on your screen. A small video window on the side of your screen will show Dr. Quandt presenting. The live Q&A session will be simulcast also and you will be able to send questions from your screen options if you wish.
