Debra Horwitz and OscarDr. Debra Horwitz received her DVM from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. She is a frequent lecturer in both North America and abroad on behavioral topics to veterinarians and pet owners and often featured on both television and radio and is a behavioral consultant on VIN. Her newest Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult Clinical Companion: Canine and Feline Behavior 2nd edition was published in January 2018.  She has authored and edited several books and book chapters including ISFM’s Feline Stress and Health (2016) and Feline Behavioral Health and Welfare (Rodan & Heath 2016). Her other books include the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine 1st and 2nd  editions, and co-author of the Lifelearn Behavior Client Handouts. She is also the lead editor of a book for pet owners authored by diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists Decoding your Dog published in January 2014. She was president of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists 2006-2008.  In 2012 she received the Veterinarian of the Year by Ceva Animal Health and has been voted NAVC 2012 and NAVC 2014 Small Animal Speaker of the Year.

Every day in practice pet owners arrive with an array of both medical and behavioral problems that need your attention.  This day is designed to provide the busy practitioner with information to diagnose, assess and help their clients and their pets with the most common canine and feline behavioral problems.

8:00 am –  9:00 am: Registration & Continental Breakfast 

9:00 am – 10:15 am: ABC's of Behavior: Interventions for the General Practitioner
You don't need to be a specialist to treat behavior illnesses. At the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Treat behavior cases like any illness from simple to moderate severity by clearly structuring your thought process for treatment

10:15 am – 10:30 am: Break 

10:30 am – 11:45 am: Anxiety and Aggression in Dogs at Home and in the Clinic
At the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Summarize how most aggressive behavior in dogs is driven by anxiety
  • Explain to owners how to create a better relationship with their pet to minimize aggression
  • Describe how low stress handling and fear free veterinary visits can improve your practice behaviorally and economically

11:45 am – 12:45 pm: Lunch

12:45 pm – 1:15 pm: Anxiety and Aggression in Dogs at Home to Familiar and Unfamiliar People 
Door charging, barking and aggressive responses to people who come into the home is a serious problem. At the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate management techniques and foundation exercises that improve these troublesome issues

1:15 pm – 2:15 pm: Feline House Soiling and Urine Marking
Feline inappropriate elimination is a major behavioral problem in cats. Utilizing a case-based approach, at the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Properly conduct a feline behavior assessment and medical examination
  • Assess behavior and/or medical problems related to soiling and urine marking
  • Design an appropriate treatment plan

2:15 pm – 2:30 pm: Break

2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Feline House Soiling and Urine Marking (continued)

3:30 pm – 4:30 pm: The Link Between Feline House Soiling and Aggression
Case studies will augment this lecture. At the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Describe social dynamics within a household that can influence house soiling
  • Explain how to deal with house soiling and aggression in combination
