MMVD In Dogs: Risk Awareness, Early Detection, and Management for More Life to Love
Kate Theobold, DVM, Senior Professional Services Vet, Pets, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health

Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is one of the most common acquired heart diseases in dogs, and its proper management requires a clear understanding of diagnostic and medication strategies across different stages of the disease. MMVD can progress to congestive heart failure (CHF); however, intervention during the preclinical phase of MMVD can delay the onset of CHF in dogs. The goal of this program is to educate veterinarians on the latest diagnostic approaches and management recommendations based on the updated American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines for MMVD. Through this session, veterinarians will gain confidence in their approach to the disease across each stage. The program will provide a review of evidence-based management options, offering insights into their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes. This knowledge will help veterinarians make informed, stage-appropriate decisions to ensure optimal care for their canine patients.

Dr. Kate Theobold graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. After graduation, she practiced as a primary care small animal veterinarian in the Twin Cities Metro for nearly 8 years. Starting in March 2025, she transitioned to a new career path as the Professional Services Veterinarian for Boehringer Ingelheim serving Minnesota and the Dakotas. Dr. Theobold’s favorite part of her new industry role is connecting with and supporting the amazing veterinarians in the region. She lives in the Twin Cities metro with her husband, 2 children and 1 chocolate labrador.
