MEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATIONS

Membership is available in all areas of the veterinary profession.


Active Member - Any graduate of a recognized veterinary college who is of good moral character and of reputable professional methods, shall be eligible to Active membership in the Association. Practitioners shall be licensed in the area in which they practice. Each candidate for membership shall submit to the Secretary/Treasurer his/her signed application. If the candidate be favorably approved by the MVMA Board of Directors, he/she will become an Active member.


Affiliate Member - Any non-DVM teachers, faculty or other non-DVM professionals of veterinary medicine, animal science, research or veterinary practice of veterinary medicine, who do not qualify for Active membership. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become a Affiliate member. Affiliate members shall have the same rights as other members, except that no Affiliate member may hold an elective office or vote on any matter nor have any rights or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association.


Academic Member- Any veterinarian working full-time (minimum .75 FTE) in a college, university or academic veterinary technician program setting. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become a Academic member. Academic members shall have the same rights as other members, except that no academic member may hold an elective office, vote on any matter, nor have any right or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association.


Associate Member - Any Veterinarian who meets the qualifications of membership but who resides and practices outside the State of Minnesota shall be eligible to become an associate member of the Association. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become an Associate member. Associate members shall have the same rights as other members, except that no associate member may hold an elective office, vote on any matter, nor have any rights or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association.


Supporting Member - Any business individual, partnership, corporation, or other business entity who is not otherwise eligible for membership in the Association, but who desires to support the purpose of the Association and be eligible to receive its publications and participate in its programs as the Board of Directors may permit, shall be eligible to become a supporting member of this Association. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, such candidate shall become a Supporting member. No supporting member business entity may hold an elective office, vote on any matter, serve on any non-industry committees, nor have any rights or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association. The special dues assessments may not be levied against supporting members. Supporting Member Application


Graduate Student/Intern/Resident Member - Any DVM currently enrolled in a graduate veterinary program from an accredited college of veterinary medicine or employed as an intern, fellow or resident at an accredited institution or facility. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become an Associate member. These members shall have the same rights as other members, except that such member may not hold an elective office, vote on any matter, nor have any right or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association.


Graduate Practicing Member - Any DVM practicing in his/her 1st or 2nd year after graduation from an accredited college of veterinary medicine or immediately following completion of graduate, intern, fellowship, or residency work. An additional year of graduate practicing member status is awarded to those who were student state VMA members throughout their four years of veterinary school and any subsequent post-veterinary school education. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become a Graduate Practicing Member. These members shall have the same rights as active members.


Student Member - Any full-time veterinary student of an accredited veterinary college shall become eligible to become a student member of this Association. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become a Student member. Student members shall have the same rights as other members, except that no student member may hold an elective office, vote on any matter, nor have any right or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association.


Life Member - Life members shall have all of the privileges of Active members, except that they shall not pay dues after attaining life member status. Any current Active member who has been in good standing as a MVMA Active member for a total of forty (40) years from the date of obtaining their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree shall be elected to Life membership. If the candidate be favorably approved by the directors, he/she shall become a Life member.


Inactive Member - Upon request to and approved by the Board of Directors, any Active member who is not currently practicing veterinary medicine shall become an Inactive member. Inactive members shall have the same rights as active members, except that they may not hold elected office or vote on any matter, are not eligible for life membership, nor have any right or title to or interest in any real or personal property of the Association. The special dues assessments may not be levied against inactive members.
