2024-2025 Lunch 'n Learn Series Sedation and anesthesia of birds has historically been an anxiety-provoking endeavor, among veterinarians and owners alike. More recent practice has shown sedation to blunt the negative effects of stress and allow better examination and diagnostic testing without posing a high risk to the patient. Anesthesia in birds has also improved, resulting in lower patient morbidity and mortality. This presentation will cover current practices for sedating and anesthetizing commonly kept pet bird species. Dr. Andrew Bean was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After completing a Bachelor of Arts in music at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, he embarked upon a short-lived career as a professional musician before becoming enamored with veterinary medicine. Dr. Bean received his DVM from the University of Minnesota, and completed a small and exotic animal rotating internship at Valley Animal Hospital in Tucson, AZ. He spent a year in general practice in San Diego before moving to the Hampton Roads, VA, to train as a specialist under Peter Fisher, DVM, DABVP (Exotic Companion Mammal Practice) at Pet Care Veterinary Hospital. After six years in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, he and his family returned home to the Twin Cities, Minnesota, where Dr. Bean founded the Avian & Exotic Medicine Department at Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota, the first exotics specialty service in the state. In 2022, he founded a residency program in avian and exotic medicine, again the first of its kind in the state. Dr. Bean is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, where he instructs students in avian and exotic medicine and surgery. 1 interactive CE credit - Click here to register! |
