FAQ
WILL OWNERS KNOW THAT THEIR PET’S CONTROLLED DRUG HISTORY IS BEING STORED IN THE VETPMP? Yes, the owner must sign a release form stating they are aware that information concerning their pet’s prescription history will be shared between veterinary professionals.
WHAT MIGHT THE FUTURE HOLD? Currently, the program is voluntary. The more veterinarians who participate in the more successful it will become. Depending on the direction of the legislature, a monitoring program may become mandatory or veterinarians could be prevented from prescribing controlled drugs.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME? The program will give you a resource to make good prescribing and dispensing decisions.
HOW THE VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION MONITORING PROGRAM WORKS Prior to dispensing or prescribing all controlled drugs, the VetPMP provides veterinarians access to the pet’s controlled drug prescription history to make more informed decisions. The prescription is made and filled at the veterinarian’s clinic or the owner takes the written prescription with them to be filled elsewhere. The veterinarian or their agent enters the data under the pet’s microchip number into the VetPMP.
As this patient moves between veterinary practices, any licensed veterinarian with an account may look up the patients’ prescription history. That veterinarian may then decline a prescription based on the information that is readily available.
HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION MONITORING (VETPMP) ACCOUNT? Accounts are available for Minnesota licensed Veterinarians and Certified Veterinary Technicians. Visit VetPMP.org to set up your account.
HOW IS THE MINNESOTA VETERINARY PRESCRIPTION MONITORING PROGRAM (VetPMP) DIFFERENT THAN THE MINNESOTA PRESCRIPTION MONITORING PROGRAM (PMP)? The MN PMP (AwareRx) system was designed for the human health care system, creating unique challenges for veterinarians that the VETPMP addresses. • The VETPMP will allow all licensed veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians access to the system • Pets are identified by a microchip number generating a permanent identification that cannot be changed between clinics • Veterinarians will be able to review the pet’s entire controlled drug history • Knowing the pet’s controlled drug history allows the veterinary profession to demonstrate we are responsible prescribers and dispensers
